We are talking fun in the sun splashing in the water.

But don’t let the Florida rays ruin the day or your vacation.

Believe me, even a cloudy day can turn you red and spring water can chill your bones.

This list will help protect you from the Florida weather and environment.

1. Sun Screen

Of course this is not to be over looked.

The Florida sun, even on a cloudy day typically has a high UV index.

We average 230-250 sunny days each year.

Be sure to check out our list of best sunscreens for Florida.

2. Sun hat

This is a great way to help stay cool when out Kayaking in Florida.

The brim will help keep the sun off your face and cast a nice shadow.

I would recommend and always trust my large straw brim sun hat.

For quick excursions, I do like having some mesh on the back of my ball cap to get a nice breeze.

To be honest, most of the time I refer to my hat as a sweat collector lol

3. Sun Glasses

It is good for the body to get some natural sun in the eyes (Don’t stare at it)!

But the reflection and exposure can due a lot of damage as well.

This is why a nice pair of UV/Polorized sun glasses is an essential piece of gear for kayaking.

Don’t for get a “crokie” or lanyard to make sure they don’t fall off and go for a swim to the bottom of the water.

4. Rash guard/water shirt

A long sleeve “Rashie” helps keep you cool and blocks the sun.

Some come with a hoodie option to offer more protection.

These are great shirts that also dry quickly incase you fall in or need to cool off.

5. Board Shorts/Swim wear

You will be on the water so of course board shorts or a good bathing suit is a no brainer.

When I am buying boardies I always try to get zipper pockets and a draw string waist band.

A comfortable fit and nice material are essential for this adventure.

6. Swim Shoes

Swim shoes are great for all water activities and land excursions.

I always prefer a full toe shoe when I am out and they typically have a thick sole to help protect the bottoms of your feet from shells and sharp objects.

Some have adjustable strings to help tighten the fit but it is all about your comfort.

7. Sandals/Flip Flops

Who in Florida or visiting Florida doesn’t have a pair of sandals?

Most sandals float in case you spill out of the kayak so retrieval is easy.

Perfect for water sports, walking or hitting up a beach bar after a fun day paddling around.

Sandals and flops are always a great option but don’t forget to put sunscreen on your feet lol

Don’t Forget:

Water Bottle

As relaxing as kayaking is, the Florida heat will take a lot out of you.

Be sure to bring a water bottle with to help stay hydrated.

Reusable bottles are always best but any source of hydration is good.

Dry Bag

Keep extra layers, your phone and wallet dry with a dry bag.

Not that we expect you to tip the kayak but you might get an occasional splash of water to cool down.

Always best to air on the side of caution when it comes to these belongings.

Keep them protected and dry with a good dry bag.

Snacks

The last thing you want is for you or Bea to get hangry out on the water.

I always try to bring some snacks along that are easy to eat and wont melt in the sun.

Granola bars, trail mix, jerky or a sandwich are some of my go to’s.

We love to pack apples, oranges and bananas for a fresh bit of food and a sweet treat.

Camp Towel

A convenient camp towel is always a good thing and does more then just dry you off.

Use your towel to cover your legs to help avid a burn.

Dip it in the water and wrap it around your neck to help stay cool.

Use it to wipe of your hands when trying to capture a picture perfect moment.

And of course, wipe away sweat 🙂

Rain Jacket/Umbrella

Florida’s weather during certain times of year bring on pretty consistent and regular rain storms.

Rain can sometimes be a blessing to keep you cool but can change you from fun in the sun to uncomfortably chilly.

Always check the weather before you head but if its a 50/50 chance of rain…

Err on the side of caution on this one. Pack some sort of rain protection.

Avoid Cotton

Of Course!! Cotton clothing holds water and gets heavy.

Cotton doesn’t dry fast and can make this an absolute miserable experience.

Try poly blend clothing for a quicker dry time and a more comfortable fell as you paddle through the Florida waters.

In Conclusion

These helpful tips on what to wear will be sure to make your time on the water is enjoyable.

Don’t forget to check the weather before heading out and double check your gear for the essentials.

Research the area for cool and unique species of wildlife that you might encounter or spot.

And of course, have fun paddling and splashing around in the Florida sun!
